This year "EE" carries the Tench Vineyard designate. They have taken a special block, 2A, which has an incredible red, rocky soil and the winemaker used it as the anchor. In a lineup of past vintages, this wine most resembles the 2008. It has amazing intensity without any hard edges. The Cabernet Sauvignon gives it a core of red and blue fruits, while the Franc provides backbone, and floral and tobacco aromatics.
The 2013 EE Tench Vineyard, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Cabernet Franc, is a stunner. This comes from the red, rocky terraces near the Dalla Valle Vineyard on the western Vaca hillsides in Oakville. This wine has great intensity, with notes of scorched earth, jammy blackberry and cassis fruit, some licorice, underbrush and truffle. It is elegant, yet powerful and authoritative, pure and multi-layered, with a phenomenal finish of close to 50 seconds. This wine should drink well for 20-25 years.
Strikingly complex, rich and nuanced, with a wonderful sense of harmony and finesse. Displays an opulent core of juicy black cherry, blackberry, black licorice, savory dried herb, cedary oak and loamy earth. The finish gains depth and nuance, hanging on the palate. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2017 through 2030.
